  • After watching Fulton win match after match against the Boonville Pirates wrestling team last night at the Windsor gymnasium, head coach Christian Stock said the youth and inexperience on the team really showed against the Hornets.
While recording just one win on the evening, as senior Brennan Hammers picked up a third-period pin against Fulton’s Derrick Coffelt in 4:39 in the 285-pound weight class, the rest of the night belonged to the Hornets in a dominating performance by a score of 70-6.
The loss dropped Boonville to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the NCMC. The Pirates will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at Hannibal starting at 6 p.m.
Stock said what a tough match. “Fulton is really going to be putting up a fight for the top spot in the conference this season,” Stock said. “We again had many opens and will fight that all year. We have our work cut out for us every time we step on the mat with the number of opens we have in our lineup. We do have the chance of filling one more spot in the next couple of weeks. We are young and it showed last night against an experienced team. We really have to get back in the wrestling room and work the fundamentals. We are missing so many little things that we should start to recognize. The experience on the mat is the only thing that is going to make it better.”
As for Hammers’ match, Stock said Brennan wrestled a good match. “He wrestled that kid several times and every time it has been a close match point-wise and it looked like it was going to be the same this time. Both wrestlers made a critical error, we just happened to come out on top and get a pin from it. I am really looking forward to seeing how much improvement Brennan came make over last season. He is off to a good start already,” Stock said.
The Hornets left little doubt by recording wins in 13 out of the 14 weight classes, three by forfeits, to lead at one point in the match by a score of 46-0.
The downfall for the Pirates started in the 138-pound weight class, with Austin Hulbert losing by pin against Trenton Clines in 2:35.
The Hornets then picked up two more wins at 145 and 152, with Trey Hudson pinning Dylan Snapp in 5:29. Meanwhile, at 160, Drew Benner won by a major decision over Andrew Broyhill 13-3.
Fulton also picked up four straight forfeits at 170, 182, 195 and 220 to extend the lead to 46-0.
The Pirates got a little reprieve in the 285-pound weight class when Hammers picked up a third-period pin.
However it was pretty much all Fulton after that, with Josh McClure winning by pin over Quincy Banuet in the 113-pound weight class in 54 seconds.
