The St. Joseph Pilot Grove boys and girls junior high basketball teams each brought home trophies while competing in the Blackwater Tournament on Friday.
While the St. Joseph Pilot Grove boys defeated the host team 33-31 to finish second overall, the Lady Cougars captured the third-place trophy by turning back Orearville in a thriller 25-24.
Brady Rentel had 17 points, five rebounds and two steals to lead the St. Joseph Pilot Grove boys while Parker Schuster added eight points, five rebounds and five steals, Layne Wessing with six points, one rebound and one steal, Anderson Twenter with two points and two rebounds, Jared Schupp with six rebounds, Kale Day with two steals and one rebound and Layton Streck with one steal.
For Blackwater, Tyler Schuster had 19, Preston Renfrow nine and Kurt Danner with three.
St. Joseph Pilot Grove coach Jeff Wessing said this was a hard-fought game with evenly matches team. “Neither team had more than a three-point lead during the game, trading baskets and keeping it tied,” Wessing said.
As for the Lady Cougars, they trailed Orearville 18-17 after three quarters of play before rallying back with a 8-6 scoring edge in the final period for the come from behind victory.
St. Joseph Pilot Grove coach Eric Kraus said it was a cold shooting night overall but the girls found a way to win.
Emily Schupp had the game-high for the Lady Cougars with 12 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Karsyn Kraus and Marissa Day each had five points in the game. Day also had two assists, one rebound and one steal while Kraus added four rebounds, Celine Dodson with three points and five rebounds, Madeline Goehman with two rebounds and Maci Twenter and Isabella Heckman each with one rebound.

The Pilot Grove girls junior high basketball team scored a one-point victory over arch-rival St. Joseph Pilot Grove last Thursday in the Blackwater Tournament.
Reagan Walker had 13 points and Melanie Wolfe six for the Lady Tigers, who led 14-13 after three quarters of play.
For St. Joseph Pilot Grove, Marissa Day had six points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Karsyn Kraus finished the game with five points, six rebounds and one blocked shot while Celine Dodson added five points, two rebounds and one steal, Emily Schupp with four points, five rebounds and three steals, Isabella Heckman with four rebounds and one steal and Madeline Goehman with four rebounds.

The Columbia Tigers basketball team outscored St. Joseph Pilot Grove 16-4 in the first quarter and never looked back, beating the Cougars last Thursday in the Blackwater Tournament.
