  • Emde’s double-double leads Bunceton past Tuscumbia, 66-56

  • Bunceton junior Rachel Emde looked to be in mid-season form Tuesday night in the season opener against the Tuscumbia Lions.
    While scoring 21 points and pulling down 23 rebounds for a double-double, Emde also had three assists and two steals to lead the Lady Dragons past Tuscumbia 66-56.
    The Lady Dragons, 1-0 on the season, led Tuscumbia 27-25 at the half and 43-37 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, Bunceton outscored the Lady Lions 23-19 to win the game by 10.
    Bunceton coach Mike Arnold said for the first game the girls played well offensively. “Defensively, we gave up too many points,” Arnold said. “I thought we rebounded the ball well. We ran the floor, but 23 turnovers is too much. Overall, I was very proud of the girls.”
    Julia Kahle also scored in double figures for Bunceton with 14 points along with eight rebounds and four assists. Erica Kahle had nine points, six rebounds and three assists while Maddie Berwanger chipped in eight points, six rebounds, three steals and one assist, Deanne Emde with eight points, six rebounds and two steals, Sam Brandes with six points, four rebounds and four assists and Lexus Chapman with two rebounds.
    Tuscumbia was led by Kendra Vaughan with 16 points.
    As for the Bunceton boys, they fell to Tuscumbia by a score of 64-57.
    The Dragons led 10-9 after one and 20-14 at the half but was outscored 50-37 in the final-two periods.
    Bunceton coach Yancy Cody said he was very proud of the way the boys came out and played. “It’s an ok start to a long season,” Cody said. “My kids never quit playing. We just gotta learn how to finish a game.”
    Jacob Clevenger had a double-double in the game for Bunceton with 24 points and 11 rebounds. He also had one steal and one assist.
    Ashton Campbell had 12 points, five rebounds and two assists while Kyler Tucker added 11 points, four rebounds, three steals and one assist, Will Twenter with seven points, six rebounds and one steal, Aaron Clevenger with three points, one rebound and one steal and Kyle Held with five rebounds, four assists and one steal.
