Lady Cougars win 25-22 over High Point, boys rally in the fourth to beat High Point 39-37

The St. Joseph Pilot Grove boys junior high basketball team couldn’t have picked a better time to rally past High Point Friday night in the championship game of the Clarksburg Tournament.
Trailing 18-14 at the half and 28-23 after three quarters of play, the Cougars stormed back in the final period with a 16-9 scoring edge to beat High Point by a score of 39-37.
As for the St. Joseph Pilot Grove girls, they held off a fourth quarter rally by High Point for a 25-22 victory.
St. Joseph Pilot Grove boys coach Jeff Wessing said the Cougars fought back in the fourth quarter with the game tied at 34-34 in the final seconds and then Layne Wessing shot and made a three-pointer to put St. Joseph in the lead 37-34. High Points J. Shirley then answered back with a three-pointer to tie the game at 37-all, Wessing said. Then, after in-bounding the pass with four seconds left, Wessing said Brady Rentel drove the lane to make a layup to put St. Joseph ahead 39-37.
Brady Rentel had 18 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two assists in the game for St. Joseph Pilot Grove.
Layne Wessing finished the game with eight points while Anderson Twenter added seven points and three rebounds, Kale Day with four points and two rebounds, Parker Schuster with two points and 10 rebounds, Jared Schupp with six rebounds and Layton Gerke with one rebound.
For High Point, Asbury had 12, Turpin eight, Blankenship and Percival six each, Shirley three and Porter with two.
As for the St. Joseph Pilot Grove girls, who improved to 5-2 on the season, they led High Point 7-3 after one, 18-8 at the half and 21-11 after three quarters of play. However, in the final period, High Point rallied back with a 11-4 scoring edge for the victory.
St. Joseph Pilot Grove coach Eric Kraus said the girls won the championship game with a good defensive effort.
Celine Dodson had the team-high for St. Joseph Pilot Grove with nine points along with three steals and two rebounds.
Marissa Day finished the game with seven points, six rebounds and three steals while Emily Schupp added five points, five steals and three rebounds, Karsyn Kraus with two points, seven rebounds, two steals, two blocked shots and one assist, Isabella Heckman with two points, two rebounds and one blocked shot, Madeline Goehman with five rebounds and Maci Twenter with one rebound.
High Point was led by Blankenship with 12 points.
