Rachel Lenz led three players in double figures with 17 points as the Bunceton girls junior high basketball team defeated Malta Bend 47-29 in CCAA action Tuesday night at Bunceton.
The Lady Dragons, who closed out the season at 3-8 overall and 2-4 in the conference, trailed Malta Bend 20-17 at the half before rallying back with a 30-9 advantage in the final two periods for the victory.
Bunceton coach Mike Arnold said the girls had a good year. “We got better at every phase of the game,” Arnold said. “I enjoyed coaching this group of girls. I’m excited about the future of the Lady Dragons.”
In addition to scoring 17 points, Lenz also had six rebounds in the game.
Lauren Wieland finished the game with 13 points while Emily Clevenger added 10, Courtney Johnson four and Kylie Heilman with one.
As for the Bunceton boys, they matched Malta Bend with five points in the first quarter and then outscored the Tigers 14-7 in the second to lead at the half by a score of 19-12. Unfortunately for the Dragons, they were unable to hold on to the lead as Malta Bend rallied back with a 18-6 scoring edge in the second half for the victory.
Bunceton coach Yancy Cody said the kids played hard every game. “We got better on both ends of the court,” Cody said.
Lucas Eberburg had the game-high for Malta Bend with 16 points.
For Bunceton, who closed out the season at 1-10 overall and 1-5 in the CCAA conference, Bryan Terrell had 15 points and six rebounds while Rylee Knapheide added six points and David Knipp and Anderson Breece each with two points.
