  • Over 2,700 of the Nation's top wrestlers from over 38 states all gathered in Cedar Falls, Iowa to compete in the 2012 USA Wrestling Pre-Season National Championships.
Brant Whitaker, a fourth grader at David Barton Elementary, competed in the third and fourth grade division in the 80 pound weight class.
Whitaker started the day wrestling an Iowa wrestler that he pinned in 21 seconds. He then moved to the second round, where he beat the Iowa State runner-up from last year 10-0. In the third round, or the quarterfinals, Whitaker had a tough match against the Wisconsin State champ from last year but won 4-1 to move on to the semifinals. In the semifinals, Whitaker found himself matched against a fellow Missourian, and good friend from his wrestling team in St. Louis; Chase Brock. Whitaker lost in the semiss to Brock, and was sent to the backside of the bracket, where he pinned his final-two nationally ranked opponents to win third place.
