Parker Schuster had 13 points and 11 rebounds as the St. Joseph Pilot Grove boys junior high basketball team defeated Hardeman 35-33 last Friday in Pilot Grove.
The Cougars, 2-0 on the season, trailed Hardeman 18-14 at the half before rallying back with a 21-15 advantage in the final-two periods for the victory.
Schuster also had four steals and one blocked shot in the game while Brady Rentel added nine points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Rentel also hit two free throws in the closing seconds to preserve the win for the Tigers. But even then Hardeman had a chance while driving the full length of the court and missing a shot at the buzzer.
Layne Wessing finished the game with five points and one rebound while Anderson Twenter added four points, three rebounds and two steals, Jared Schupp with four points and five rebounds and Kale Day with two rebounds.
As for the St. Joseph Pilot Grove girls, they defeated Hardeman 37-16.
The Lady Cougars led Hardeman 19-6 at the half and 28-8 after three quarters of play and then held a 9-8 advantage in the final period for the victory.
St. Joseph Pilot Grove coach Eric Kraus said every girl contributed meaningful playing time. “I thought the girls played good team defense and full-court pressure,” Kraus said.
Marissa Day led the scoring attack in the game for St. Joseph Pilot Grove with 22 points along with eight steals and five rebounds.
Emily Schupp had nine points, five steals, four rebounds and one assist while Celine Dodson added six points, six rebounds, three rebounds and two assists, Isabella Heckman with seven rebounds and one steal, Madeline Goehman with five rebounds and one assist, Karsyn Kraus with two assists, two steals and one rebound and Maci Twenter and Cassie Grandestaff each with one rebound.
For Hardeman, Abby O’Neal had 16 points.
