Reagan Walker scored a game-high 18 points as the Pilot Grove girls junior high basketball team turned back Malta Bend in CCAA action last night at Pilot Grove 34-12.
As for the Pilot Grove boys, they weren’t so lucky while falling to Malta Bend by a score of 33-16.
The Lady Tigers, who closed out the season at 9-5 overall, opened the first half with a 20-6 lead and then outscored Malta Bend 14-6 in the final-two periods for the victory.
Pilot Grove coach Landon Daniel said the girls ended their season on a high note with a good showing of defense and easy transition buckets on the other end.
“Reagan Walker had a big night on defense and got 18 points off of mostly layups,” Daniel said. “The girls did an excellent job of rebounding and limiting Malta Bend to only one shot, which is something we have worked on all year. I’m really proud of the girls and we had a great season.”
Cathlynn Hardt tossed in six points while Madison Kempf added four points and Isabella Roth, Kirstie Schupp and Sasha Moore each with two points.
For Malta Bend, Annsly Parker had six points and Brett Martin four points.
As for the Pilot Grove boys, they trailed Malta Bend 16-6 at the half but rallied back with a 7-5 scoring edge in the third quarter to cut the lead to eight at 21-13. Unfortunately for Pilot Grove, they had no answer in the final period as Malta Bend held a 12-3 advantage for the victory.
Pilot Grove coach D.J. Leverton said this was the last game of the year. “I had a great time working with this group of young men,” Leverton said. “There were very few dull moments with this team and I look forward to seeing them next year on the court.”
Lucas Eberting had 15 points and Zach Malter 10 for Malta Bend.
For Pilot Grove, who closed out the season at 1-11 overall, Cole Mize had seven. Preston Shepherd chipped in four points while Austin Kollmeyer and Lane Mize added two points each.
