The Boonville Lady Pirates volleyball team wanted to set the tone early last night on the road against the Kirksville Tigers, which just so happened to be Senior-Parents Night.
While sweeping Kirksville in two at Boonville back on September 10, the Lady Pirates had a chance to win the season series in addition to keeping their hold on second place in the North Central Missouri Conference.
As it turned out, Boonville wound up winning both by the scores of 25-20 and 25-23 to improve to 14-5-1 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
“We wanted to go in to Kirksville senior parent night and set the tone and take away the momentum of their home crowd etc.,” Stone said. “We had a little too much adrenaline. Finally we settled down and started grinding away at Kirksville to take the lead at around 8-8. We established the middle to take some pressure off our outside hitters Bailey Pfeiffer and Anna Davis and we had a lot of opportunities with one on one blocking on the outsides. We finished the match behind strong serving from Kristin Hoff and Zoe Root to keep Kirksville out of system. We could control their outsides but not the middles.”
In the second set, Stone said the girls controlled the middles from Kirksville better with a triple blocking scheme and they had to relay more on the outside hitters.
“Kirksville fought hard and we made a few communication errors that allowed them to gain momentum when we had opportunities to put the match away,” Stone said. “Strong blocking at the net and strategic ball placement from our front row hitters picked them apart and frustrated their defense. We served well as team only missing one serve the entire match.
We showed a lot of character tonight we did not play error free but we played with energy, desire and pursued every ball. We played an up tempo match and was able to take advantage of strong ball control at the end of the second set to put Kirksville away.”
Bailey Pfeiffer led the Lady Pirates with 14 kills on 22 of 24 attack attempts along with 11 assists, 10 service points with two aces, nine digs and two blocks.
Kristin Hoff finished the match with 21 digs, 15 service points with one ace and two kills on 6 of 6 attack attempts, while Zoe Root added 17 assists, eight service points with four aces and three digs, Morgan Edwards with eight blocks, seven kills on 10 of 12 attack attempts with two digs, Mariah Root with 11 digs, six service oints with one ace, Anna Davis with five kills on 9 of 9 attack attempt with three digs, two blocks and two assists, Taylor Fry with five blocks, three kills on 9 of 12 attack attempts and one dig, Kylie Hohensee with four digs, three service points, one assist and 3 of 4 on attack attempts, Raven Stone with three kills on 5 of 7 attack attempts with two blocks, two digs and one assist, Bridgett Fischer with three service points with one ace and two digs, Sam Ivy with two blocks, one dig and 2 of 2 on attack attempt and Anna Terlep with two service points.
