  • After struggling in the opening set Tuesday night against Marshall in NCMC action at the Windsor gymnasium, Boonville volleyball coach Susie Stone seemed to be more pleased than anything with the team pushing through in the second set and showing character when they were not executing at the level they wanted.
The Lady Pirates still won both sets 25-20 and 25-18 to improve to 13-5-1 overall and 5-2 in the NCMC.
However it wasn't to the liking of Stone, who had the varsity team go through a series of drills after the match.
And rightly so. While the Lady Owls dropped to 8-14-2 overall and 2-6 in the NCMC, Stone couldn't have been particularly pleased in Game 1 as Boonville committed five straight errors to start the match. But then after battling back and forth and playing to five ties at 8-8, 9-9, 16-16, 19-19 and 20-20, the Lady Pirates took over the match by reeling off five straight points on two Marshall hitting errors, a hit off the block by Taylor Fry, a kill by Kristin Hoff and a dink by Bailey Pfeiffer to win the first set 25-20.
Another crucial point of the match may have come after Marshall tied the match at 19-all. After calling a timeout, Boonville came back and reeled off five straight.
"We struggled from the beginning of the match," Stone said. "We committed five errors as a team in a row to let Marshall go up on us 5-0 before we finally got a kill to set the tone for the match. Kristin Hoff and Bailey Pfeiffer got on a strong serving role for us to get some momentum going our direction to finally tie the game at 8-8. I felt like the turning point after that was our ability to get some strong connections at the net when the game was tied 20-20 because we were able to push through by blocking and strong back row passing."
In the second set, the Lady Pirates took a different approach by going up on Marshall 4-1 on kills by Pfeiffer and Fry and back-to-back service points by Mariah Root.
But even then Marshall kept the set close while battling back on five different occasions to tie the game at 7-7, 8-8, 9-9, 10-10 and 13-13. The Lady Owls never got any closer in the match as Boonville came back and reeled off six straight points on the serving by Mariah Root to extend the lead to 19-13.
Marshall never got any closer than four points while cutting the lead at 19-15 and 21-7. However for the remainder of the match, the Lady Pirates pushed through at the net with three straight points on the serving of Pfeiffer to make it 24-17. Sam Ivy also had a kill during the rally while Anna Davis hit off the block.

"The second game we sided out right away but then failed to push a strong lead," Stone said. "We served strong in this match with nine aces to keep Marshall out of system. We did a better job of pushing tempo and were able to fend off a Marshall team that would not give up."
Bailey Pfeiffer led the Lady Pirates with 10 assists, nine service points with three aces along with seven kills on 14 of 18 attack attempts, six digs and one block.
Zoe Root had nine assists, nine service points with three aces along with eight digs and 1 of 1 on attack attempts. Kristin Hoff finished the match with 17 digs, six service points with two aces and two kills on 3 of 3 attack attempts, followed by Mariah Root with 11 digs and seven service points with five aces, Kylie Hohensee with six digs, four service points, two assists and one kill on 3 of 4 attack attempts, Anna Davis with six kills on 12 of 13 attack attempts, three digs, one block and one assist, Morgan Edwards with six blocks, four kills on 9 of 11 attack attempts with one dig, Taylor Fry with four blocks, three kills on 7 of 8 attack attempts and one dig, Raven Stone with two assists, two digs, two blocks and one kill on 4 of 5 attack attempts, Sam Ivy with one block and one kill on 2 of 2 attack attempts and Anna Terlep with one dig.
In the JV match, Boonville defeated Marshall in three games 25-21, 14-25 and 25-23.
Boonville JV coach Carlei Wies said overall the girls just lacked energy through the whole match, especially Games 1 and 2. "We woke up in the third game and started to play our game," Wies said.
Makenzie Ficken had 21 assists along with eight kills, seven digs and four service points to lead the JV team.
Emma Goff finished the match with 17 assists along with 11 service points with three aces and five digs, while Daryl Fagan added 26 digs, five service points with one ace, Bridgett Fischer with 13 digs, six kills and three service points with one ace, Katarina Xufuris with 10 service points with three aces and nine digs, Anna Terlep with five digs, five kills, three blocks and four service points, Jessica Luscombe with nine kills, four blocks and two digs, Sydney Poindexter with five kills, three digs and one assist, Kelsi Dillender with four kills, two digs and one assist, Sophie Taube with three digs and two service points with one ace, Emily O'Laughlin with three kills and one dig and Holly Brady with two digs.
