The Boonville Lady Pirates volleyball team could get used to playing on the road. Last night at Stover, Boonville defeated the Lady Bulldogs in two straight games 25-10 and 26-24.
While the win improved Boonville’s record to 15-5 overall, head coach Susie Stone said the girls played a strong Stover team, who had two aggressive outside hitters. “In the first set we controlled the tempo of the match with strong serving and we picked them apart defensively,” Stone said. “Taylor Fry was hot on the front row going 3-3 with three kills in the first set. Our blocks altered their hitting and Stover had trouble getting around the blocks consistently and therefore forced a lot of balls out of bounds. Our passing game kept us in system and Zoe Root spread the ball around and was very successful winning 25-10.”
In the second set, Stone said the girls started in serve receive and allowed Stover to score the first three points before they got on the board with back to kills by Raven Stone.
“We battled back and forth to around point 10 when Morgan Edwards delivered a monstrous block,” Stone said. “We struggled with Stover just blasting through our blocks since they could not hit around so they decided to go through them and were successful with this strategy for about five points, but then we returned the favor when Kylie Hohensee and Taylor Fry scored on back to back hits where they tooled the blocks of Stover to tie the score back up at 15-15. Stover put together another run of points to go up 19-15 before we came back on back to back kills by Bailey Pfeiffer to cut the lead 19-17.”
Stone said Boonville battled back and forth for the next four points with the back row defense of Mariah Root and Kristin Hoff, who were untouchable in system and dug everything up.
“We trailed 23-19 when Bailey Pfeiffer stepped to the service line and rattled off a strong serving rally which consisted of aces and serves that kept them out of system and forcing Stover to send free balls over the net. We were able to take advantage of those for kills from Anna Davis and Raven Stone. With the score tied at 24-24, Morgan Edwards had another block at the net to put us up 26-25 and then she went back to the service to serve the game winning ace. The girls played with more energy tonight and it was a good way to start the week.”
Kristin Hoff had 27 digs along with eight service points with two aces along with one assist. She was also 1 of 1 on attack attempts.
Bailey Pfeiffer finished the match with 11 assists, 11 digs, nine service points with five aces along with five kills on 11 of 13 attack attempts and one block. Zoe Root added 13 assists, six service points with three aces and four digs while Mariah Root had 13 digs, five service points with two aces and 2 of 2 on attack attempts, Morgan Edwards with five blocks, five kills on 8 of 9 attack attempts, two digs and one service point with one ace, Kylie Hohensee with six digs, two kills on 4 of 5 attack attempts, three service points and one assist, Raven Stone with six kills on 8 of 9 attack attempts with four digs, two blocks and one assist, Taylor Fry with five kills on 7 of 8 attack attempts, four blocks and two digs, Anna Davis with seven digs, three kills on 7 of 8 attack attempts with one block, Sam Ivy with one dig, one block and one kill on 2 of 2 attack attempts, Bridgett Fischer with two service points and one dig and Anna Terlep with one service point and one dig.
In the JV match, Boonville defeated Stover in three games 25-17, 22-25 and 25-19.
Boonville JV coach Carlei Wies said the girls started off the match aggressively by having a strong presence at the net. “In the second game, we struggled to play consistently and never pulled away,” Wies said. “We let Stover stay with us for the beginning of the third game, but we were able to break away by getting on a couple of serving streaks.”
Anna Terlep had 12 digs, 10 service points with two aces, nine kills and four blocks for the Lady Pirates.
Makenzie Ficken finished the match 12 assists, nine digs, nine service points with four aces and five kills while Daryl Fagan added 21 digs, Kat Xufuris with 13 digs, seven service points with two aces and one kill, Bridgett Fischer with 11 digs, six service points and five kills, Emma Goff with 11 digs and seven assists, Jessica Luscombe with six kills and five blocks and Sydney Poindexter with three kills.
