Boonville sophomore Tyler Drew picked up a goal at the 94 minute in double overtime on an assist from Cody Painter to lead the Pirates past Cole Camp last night by a score of 3-2.
The Pirates, improving to 4-13 on the season, led Cole Camp 1-0 at the half on a goal from Drew, which was also assisted by Painter at the 27 minute.
Meanwhile, in the second half, Cole Camp tied the game at 1-all with a goal at the 48 minute only to have Boonville answer five minutes later on an assist from Eric Warren to Drew at the 53-minute mark.
However, with just three minutes left in the match, Cole Camp scored again at the 77 minute mark to tie the game at 2-all. Then, after both teams failed to score in the first overtime, Drew came back with his third goal of the game for a hat trick at the 94 minute mark for the victory.
Boonville soccer coach Tim Brown said he cannot stress enough how important it is to have someone on your team with the killer instinct in front of the goal, someone who will put the ball in the back of the net when the decisive moment arises.
“Unfortunately, the JV Pirates have yet to see that one confident player step up,” Brown said. “The varsity squad, on the other hand, currently have one, Tyler Drew, but until someone else steps up to lighten the load, he may very well have to carry the team on his back for some time. Hopefully, he can avoid illness, injury, or a defense that realizes if they can defend him, we probably will not score. Against Cole Camp, we saw him take charge and almost singlehandedly defeat a team that we constantly gave away chance after chance.”
Boonville finished the match with 18 shots on goal and 28 shot attempts while Cole Camp had 15 shots on goal and 25 shot attempts.
Boonville junior Nathan Green also had 13 saves in the match.
In the JV match, Cole Camp defeated Boonville 1-0 with a goal at the 27 minute mark.
Cole Camp’s JV finished the match with five shots on goal and 12 shot attempts while Boonville had only two shots on goal and four shot attempts.
Brendan Twenter also had four saves in the match for the Pirates, who dropped to 1-9-2 overall.
