  • The Boonville Lady Pirates softball team knew its back was against the wall while trailing Odessa 8-7 in a suspended game Friday night in Odessa.
After battling back and forth against the Lady Bulldogs on Thursday, the Lady Pirates had to overcome a one-hour delay due to lightning while trailing 6-4. However after battling back to tie the game at 6-all in the sixth, head coach Christie Zoeller said the Lady Pirates wasted another golden opportunity to take the lead in the bottom-half of the seventh with one out and bases loaded with the score tied at 7-7. But after failing to score a run, Odessa came back and took the lead at 8-7 with one out in the eighth when play was suspended again until Friday.
Meanwhile, after traveling back to Odessa on Friday, Zoeller said senior outfielder Madison Lester made a catch and then threw out a runner at home to end the inning.
Boonville then ran into some bad luck in the bottom-half of the eighth when senior Emily Gerhardt lined out to the center fielder and then the Odessa pitcher got freshman Millie Moyer on a strikeout. Then, to end the game, Zoeller said the Odessa left fielder made a fantastic catch on the long fly ball by Michelle Surratt to preserve a 8-7 victory.
In the championship game later that evening, top-seeded Grain Valley defeated Odessa by a score of 8-3.
Zoeller said the Lady Pirates had many different chances to win this game but just couldn’t seem to complete it.
“We did well offensively with 13 hits, we just had too many silly errors that contributed to many Odessa runs,” Zoeller said. “After all the delays we definitely stayed tough and never once gave up. As a coach you are always proud to see that determination in your team even when things seem hard. I am proud of their drive to finish this game.”
Bass picked up the win on the mound for Odessa while Michelle Surratt took the loss for Boonville, who closed out the season at 15-11 overall. In eight innings, Bass struck out eight batters and gave up seven runs on 13 hits and one walk. Surratt, meanwhile, pitched all eight innings and allowed eight runs on 13 hits and three walks while striking out four.
Schwartzoff and Smith each had three hits in the game for Odessa. Schwartzoff went 3-for-4 with a single, double and a triple, while Smith finished the game with three singles.
For Boonville, Madison Lester went 4-for-4 with four singles and one RBI. Addy Reardon was 2-for-5 with a double, triple and one RBI while Emily Gerhardt added two doubles and two RBIs, Havyn Monteer with a two-RBI double, Olivia Imhoff also with one double, Millie Moyer with a RBI-single and Michelle Surratt and McKenna McAreavy each with one single.
