  • In a late addition to the schedule, the Boonville boys and girls cross-country team competed in the Helias Catholic Invitational over the weekend.
While competing against a field of five other teams and 90 runners, Boonville head coach Dustin Davis said junior Rory Concannon was the lone participate for the boys and finished 31st overall in a time of 18:12.
Caleb Ruth of Jefferson City captured first in the male division in a time of 16:22.
“Rory was ambitious, got out a little too hard, and had trouble competing in the second half of the race,” Davis said. “I was proud of his effort, but he never looked comfortable. It was the most difficult course we’ve run on, and the competition up front was as good as we’ve seen anywhere, so I’m not surprised he didn’t run a season’s best. I was hoping he’d finish a little higher, but for him to run 18:12 on a course like that after a good week of training, I have to believe we’re moving forward. We’ll have an opportunity to feel a little more rested for the conference meet this week.”
As for the Boonville girls cross-country team, freshman Holly Krumm and junior Savannah Burnett competed in the JV division and finished second and 40th in times of 22:06 and 28:53, respectively.
Davis said 47 girls participated in the race, which was won by Brenna Duncan from Jefferson City in a time of 21:25.
Although Krumm wound up finishing second in the race, Davis said she looked great in the first and third miles, but had some trouble in the second mile.
“I thought Holly could’ve won the race and I still believe that, but we just haven’t learned how to push the second mile yet. Holly is ready to break 22:00 and I think when she does, she’ll really run well but we’re still waiting on it. Savannah didn't look good early on but looked a lot better at the end of the race. I know she’s been battling some illness lately and I think she’s just not fully recovered yet.
“We’ll be back in action at the conference meet this Saturday at Mexico, and I’m getting excited. I’ve heard the course is supposed to be fast and it’s the right time of the year for us to run a little faster. We’ll taper some of our training off later in the week so we can freshen up a little, but we’ll have to pile it back on the following Monday in preparation for districts and state.”
