Ernest (Bud) Oerly, formerly of Boonville, passed away on Thursday, October 4, 2012. He was 85 years old. The son of Ernest Charles Oerly and Annie Grey Cochran, he was born September 19, 1927 in GoochesMill, Missouri. He grew up in Boonville.
After graduating from Laura Speed Elliot High School, Bud attended Northwest Missouri State in Kirksville. In 1946, he was inducted into the army and served in Korea as a Staff Sargent. On August 30, 1949 Bud married his hometown sweetheart, Betty Jane Jackson.He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Central Methodist University in Fayette and a Masters in Education from the University of Missouri in Columbia.
Bud taught at several Missouri high schools. In 1962 he returned to his beloved Boonville where he taught and was principal at Boonville High School until 1992. Bud served as President of the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals in 1984/1985. In 1986 he was nationally recognized as one of 53 outstanding secondary school principals. He was an active member of the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Boonville and served for many years on the Walnut Grove Cemetery board. He was a lifelong member of the Boonslick Shrine Club.
Bud has been blessed with many wonderful lifelong friends who shared his enthusiasm for golf, bridge, hunting, farming and homemade ice cream. Never one to take it easy Bud had several business enterprises including an ice house and home insulation business. He enjoyed woodworking and traveling the state refereeing basketball and football. After retiring, he spent many happy hours on his farm.
In addition to his wife, Bud is survived by his daughters Ann Oerly Bill (Bob) and Susan OerlyJones (Bob) and five grandchildren, Nicholas, Katherine, Spencer, Audrey and William. He was proceeded in death by his parents and sister, Ann Grey Hodder.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Boonville. Visitation will be held from 4pm to 7pm on Saturday, October 6, at ThacherWood Funeral Home. Burial will be at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Boonville. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Alzheimer's Association.
