  • The Boonville Lady Pirates tennis team had its season come to a screeching halt Tuesday night in the semifinal round of the Class 1 District 8 Tournament at Marshall.
After beating Carrollton one night earlier in the opening round by a score of 5-1, the Lady Pirates fell Tuesday night on the road against top-seeded Marshall 6-0.
Despite the loss, Boonville tennis coach Stephanie Green said it was disappointing to lose this match but the girls really didn’t make it so easy on Marshall.
“They played a lot of break points and came out on the short end of the games, but they played very well overall,” Green said. “This is the first team to make it past the first round of team district play since that element was put into the season, so overall it was a successful run and gives us something to work for in the future.
“Cook and Richerson playec competitive matches, moved the ball well and made their opponents work. Gerlach and Esser had trouble finding a rhythm and using the whole court, but each hit the ball solidly and played strategic games. Kraus and Williams continue to improve and feel more confident on the singles court. Both hit the ball well.”
In singles matches, No. 1 player Amanda Cook fell in two straight against Molly Evans 6-1 and 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Missy Richerson lost to Stephanie Markes 6-1 and 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Kelsey Gerlach dropped two straight against Taylor Crawford 6-1 and 6-3. At No. 4 singles, Carley Esser lost in two straight against Payton Beeler 6-1 and 6-2. At No. 5 singles, Megan Kraus fell to Amanda Harrelson 6-0 and 6-0. Meanwhile, at No. 6 singles, Kelsie Williams dropped two straight against Idalia Aguilar 6-0 and 6-1.
