  • The Boonville Lady Pirates softball team did the best they could under the circumstances over the weekend while competing in the Lady Husker Softball Tournament in Higginsville.
With starting pitcher Michelle Surratt on the mend, the Lady Pirates went with a make-shift pitching staff for the duration of the tournament and came away with a record of 2-2.
Boonville assistant coach Stacey Bishop said the girls played pretty well this weekend.
“We had 33 hits and scored 24 runs in four games,” Bishop said. “Defensively we had lots of changes as we had to throw some girls who haven’t pitched in a while but I think Havyn, Millie, Addy, Miranda and McKenna really pulled together to get it done. I was really proud of the way they came back after the third game. They truly played as a team and that is what makes me so proud of them.”
In the opening round against the Carrollton Trojans, the Lady Pirates trailed from the second inning on while dropping a 6-4 decision.
Bishop said the team hit well this game but struggled on the mound. “Michelle is out for a while due to an injury,” Bishop said. “It has been a team effort to fill her position. We out-hit Carrollton but we just struggled to score runners on base. We have to find a way to execute.”
Miranda Northern took the loss on the mound for Boonville by giving up four runs on five hits and two walks in two innings. Addy Reardon then came in and pitched 1 1/3 innings and surrendered two runs on five walks. Then, to finish the game, Millie Moyer pitched 1 2/3 innings and walked one batter.
Boonville also out-hit Carrollton despite the loss 7-5, with Addy Reardon going 3-for-3 with a single and two doubles. Havyn Monteer was 2-for-3 with a single and a triple while McKenna McAreavy added one double and Millie Moyer with one single.
In the game, the Lady Trojans led 4-1 after one and 6-3 after two. Meanwhile, in the bottom-half of the fifth, Boonville came back and tacked on another run to end the scoring.
In the second game against Adrian, the Lady Pirates jumped out to stay while pushing across five runs in the first and three again in the fifth for a 8-4 victory.
Bishop said Havyn Monteer and Millie Moyer did a good job of holding their own. “We did well staying patient at the plate and waiting for good pitches to hit,” Bishop said.
Havyn Monteer picked up the win on the mound for Boonville by giving up three runs on three hits and two walks in 3 1/3 innings. Monteer also struck out three batters. Millie Moyer then came in and pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief and allowed one run on three walks while striking out one batter.

In the third game against the Harrisburg Lady Bulldogs, Boonville dropped its second game of the tournament by a score of 7-3.
Harrisburg led 2-1 after one, 3-2 after two, 4-2 after three and 4-3 after four before pushing across three runs in the top-half of the fifth.
“We have to find a way to capitalize when we have runners on base,” Bishop said. “We’ve really struggled lately with stamina and being able to complete a game. On a positive note, the girls are having fun and not getting down on themselves. They’ve played seven games this week and we’ve got another busy week starting on Monday.”
Addy Reardon took the loss on the mound for Boonville by giving up six runs on three hits and 14 walks while striking out five batters in 4 1/3 innings. Miranda Northern then came in and pitched 2/3 inning in relief and allowed one walk while striking out two batters.
Boonville also out-hit Harrisburg 8-3, with Madison Lester going 2-for-2 with a single and a double. Havyn Monteer tripled in the game while Olivia Imhoff, Emily Gerhardt, McKenna McAreavy, Courtney Timm and Lauren Friedrich added one single each.
In the fourth and final game, Boonville defeated another former MRVC rival in the Richmond Spartans by a score of 9-5.
The Lady Pirates, improving to 14-9 on the season, played Richmond to a 4-4 tie through the first-two innings before pushing across four more runs in the fourth and one again in the fifth for the victory.
Bishop said Monteer rocked it on the mound. “She was throwing hard and consistent for having played all four games,” Bishop said. “Our team was able to be that, a team. Everyone played together, pushed each other, and supported one another until the very end. This game was truly a great Lady Pirate win.”
Havyn Monteer picked up the win on the mound for Boonville by giving up five runs on five hits and one walk in five innings. Monteer also struck out two batters. McKenna McAreavy then came in and pitched one inning in relief and issued one hit and one walk.
Miranda Northern went 3-for-4 in the game for Boonville with three singles. Havyn Monteer was 2-for-4 with a single and a triple while Millie Moyer, Taylor Ellebracht and Jackie Esser added one single each.
