  • Considering the injuries and illness beset on the Boonville Lady Pirates tennis team, a seventh place finish in the NCMC Tournament over the weekend at Hannibal was pretty much expected.
While finishing seventh with 13 points, head coach Stephanie Green said with only 11 players available to play on Saturday, the girls certainly knew they were facing a tough day with the other NCMC teams.
In the final team standings, Marshall captured first with 55 points. Kirksville finished second with 54 points, followed by Moberly with 48, Hannibal with 36, Fulton with 28, Mexico with 16 and Boonville with 12.
“We forfeited the No. 6 spot so we could fill all the doubles teams and fortunately our doubles teams were really the only things unaffected by our lineup shifts,” Green said. “It was still less than auspicious, but the girls really put their hearts into their matches and gave a good effort. Our last place finish was disappointing because these girls have worked hard this season, but they are a young team and with experience, we know they are going to get stronger.”
The top-six singles players for Boonville definitely had their hands full on Saturday. Except for  No. 4 singles player Kelsey Gerlach receiving a bye, the Lady Pirates finished the tournament 0-2 in all six matches.
Meanwhile, in doubles, the No. 1 team of Megan Kraus and Kelsie Williams finished 1-2 in the tournament by beating Ahrens and Polachek of Mexico in a loser’s bracket match by a score of 9-7.
At No. 2 doubles, the team of Becca Kempf and Breanna Connell finished 0-2 with a bye.
Then, at No. 3 doubles, the team of Megan Roth and Cindy DeVore finished 1-2 by beating the team of Kerr and Edmiston of Mexico in a loser’s bracket match 8-4.
