The Boonville Pirates junior varsity football team fell on the road Monday night against the Mexico Bulldogs by a score of 34-6.
While the loss dropped Boonville to 1-3 on the season, JV coach Joe Henke said the Pirates moved the ball well on offense, but were limited by untimely penalties and turnovers.
Henke said in the first half Mexico scored three touchdowns on mistakes by the JV offense. He said Mexico returned an interception for a touchdown, a fumble returned for a touchdown and had a blocked punt for a touchdown.
"We just cannot afford such mistakes and hope to win a game," Henke said. "I thought that at times we ran the ball well and we had several big pass plays. Jady Reese did a good job finding open receivers and Josh Judd and Jared Bledsoe did a good job of catching the ball and making big plays. We just have to work on cutting down on mistakes and missed blocking assignments. The JV defense did a good job in limiting the Mexico offense only two touchdowns. Jordan Weaver, Austin Henderson, and Mark Garrison made several strong defensive plays."
Boonville's JV football team will play next on Monday, Oct. 1 at home against the Kirksville Tigers starting at 5 p.m.
