The dog days of summer are receding into the rearview mirror. A chill is in the air. Football season is off and running. That can only mean one thing. Santa Fe Trail Days are just around the bend in New Franklin.
The Santa Fe Trail opened in 1821, originally designed to expand trading opportunities with Mexico. Over the next 60 years the trail wound its way over 900 miles, through plains and desert before ending in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Back then traveling by trail was no easy task, as passers through were subject to attacks by hostile Comanche and Apache Native American tribes. This weekend's Santa Fe Trail Days promise excitement and family fun leaving behind those bygone worries.
Friday evening kicks off with the Lion's Club Chili Cook off Contest. After filling up on hot chili cool off with a cold one at the Beer Garden. Next up, the kids get to show off in the Little Santa Fe Trail Days Prince, Princess, Queen & King Contest. Then it is time to put on your boogie shoes as the evening closes with a Lip Sync Talent Contest followed by a Teen Dance.
What better way to start Saturday morning than with a Biscuits & Gravy breakfast in the Big Tent. Shortly after breakfast the Carnival opens, and that's when the real fun begins. Pony rides are sure to be a hit with kids, just as the Car Show should be a smash. After lunch the parade kicks off. At 2 pm Silver Liner Senior Cakes and Dolls for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will be auctioned off to the highest bidders.
The afternoon highlights include a performance by the 10 Gallon Hat Band and the High Country Cowboy Church. NASCAR will then take a back seat to the Frog and Turtle Race.
After working up an appetite feel free to sample the eats from the BBQ Cook-Off Contest. A Beer Garden performance by Haywire closes out the evening. The weather will be nice for the weekend, so this weekend bring the family to the Santa Fe Trail Days.
