Missouri University begins Southeast Conference play tonight against the University of Georgia. In the past, Georgia has often had very competitive teams and this will be a good test for MU to begin with. The Southeast Conference has long been a powerful force in college football, fortunately Mezzo plays in the east instead of the west which has powerhouse teams like Alabama, Arkansas, and LSU in it. I think MU will be able to compete quite effectively in basketball, but am doubtful if they are ready for some of the tougher Southeast Conference teams in football.
I went to the brunch this morning for the reunion of the 1972 Missouri Southern Football team that won the NAIA Division II National Championship in football. That team was the first team from Missouri to win a national championship in football. Besides winning the championship, that team had a big win over UNLV at Las Vegas by the score of 7-0. Those 12 wins are still a school record at Southern. It was nice talking to many of the players from that team, some of whom I had classes with when I attended Missouri Southern back in the 1970s.
