  • A Monday morning class began the first series of fall courses that Sedalia's State Fair Community College will offer Boonville and nearby residents. After filing for bankruptcy and closing in 2002, the former Kemper Military School and College has seen its campus sit in limbo and partial dormancy. As a revitalization effort continues, claiming adjacency next to the Boonslick Heartland YMCA is the latest installment to the campus – SFCC, Boonville. Comprising a total of 830 credit hours and 30 classes are 70 students, with online courses additionally being available. The local undergraduate credit offerings now make a 90-mile round-trip to Sedalia unnecessary. Boonville, effective Monday, has its own community college. "As of right now, we have 22 faculty, two part-time advisors and a part-time administrative assistant," said Kinsey Feldman, Boonville Site Coordinator for SFCC. Feldman took on the role not long ago and, among other duties, is a liaison between the main Sedalia campus and Boonville's offices. SFCC, Boonville occupies Kemper Military School's library and learning center. Septagon Construction has been responsible for renovations and prep-work to the facility in anticipation of Monday's official start. "We are absolutely thrilled that we've been able to open a site in Boonville and extend our services there and to the surrounding communities. The city has been delightful to work with. We were able to do this for the fall semester, which we were thrilled about. Normally, an undertaking like this would've required more time, so the fact that we were able to get classes underway as quickly as we have is a testament to how well the cooperation between SFCC and Boonville has been," said SFCC President, Dr. Marsha Drennon. More listings will be available in the weeks to come. Boonville's SFCC office is open from 8 a.m. - 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Fridays. "We do have 12-week courses that will start on September 18, so what people see right now are not the only things available," Feldman said. For more information, readers are encouraged to call 660-281-5870. Alternatively, they can contact Kinsey Feldman via email at kfeldmann@sfccmo.edu.
