  • Boonville teams begin fall practice

  • Football, softball, volleyball, soccer, tennis and cross-country open the 2012 season on Monday.

  • Like most team around the state on Monday, the Boonville Pirates football, softball, volleyball, tennis, soccer and cross-country teams got a jump on the 2012 season with its first official practice. Devin Brown, who is entering his second season as the Pirates football coach, took the young Bucaneers through a morning and evening practice with approximately 43 participating. Brown said the Pirates will continue to go in shoulder pads and helmets for three days, which is mandated by the MSHSAA. However, on Wednesday, August 8, Brown will hold practice at midnight in full pads from 12 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Boonville Pirates football team will hold a scrimmage on Friday, August 10 at the BHS Sports Complex at 6:15 p.m., followed by the Jamboree one week later on Friday, August 17 at Versailles and the season opener on Friday, August 24 at California starting at 7. As for the Boonville Lady Pirates softball team, head coach Christie Zoeller said 22 girls in grades 9-12 participated in the first practice on Monday. With six starters returning from last year's team, Zoeller said the Lady Pirates will work on the basic fundamentals on Monday, which includes evaluation of hitting and taking fly balls and ground balls. On Wednesday, Zoeller said the Lady Pirates will do some situational work. “We will start getting people into positions on Thursday,” Zoeller said, “and then on Friday we will spend two hours in the morning focusing on hitting and then hold a scrimmage Friday night at 5 p.m. for “Meet the Parents Night.” The Lady Pirates softball team will open the 2012 season on Wednesday, August 22 at Columbia Hickman starting at 6 p.m. The Boonville Lady Pirates volleyball team also opened the season Monday with two-a-days under head coach Susie Stone. Stone said 24 girls participated on Monday. The Lady Pirates return 10 players who saw varsity time last year. In addition to ball control, Stone said the Lady Pirates will also work on hitting, serving, fundamental skills and communication. As for the Boonville Lady Pirates tennis team, head coach Stephanie Carey said 13 girls hit the courts for the first time on Monday. Along with going over the fundamentals, Carey said the girls also worked on forehand, backhand, ground strokes and volleys. “We will continue to work on fundamentals all week,” stated Carey. “However on Tuesday, the girls will also work on serving. Then, on Wednesday, we will work on overheads and lobs, followed by point play and evaluations on Thursday and Friday.” The Lady Pirates will return eight starters from last year's team. The Boonville Lady Pirates tennis team will begin the season on Thursday, August 23 at home against Kirksville starting at 4 p.m. As for the Boonville Pirates soccer team, they had 19 come out for the first day of practice on Monday under head coach Tim Brown. Brown said along with working on technical stuff, the Pirates will also work on dribbling, passing, receiving and games. The Boonville Pirates soccer team will open the 2012 season on Tuesday, August 28 on the road against the Oak Grove Panthers starting at 6 p.m. The Boonville boys and girls cross-country team will have a little longer before its first meet of the season, which begins on Thursday, Sept. 6 at Oak Grove starting at 4 p.m.
