The Boonville 15-year-old All-Stars moved one step closer to the championship in the Midwest Plains Regional Tournament in Liberal, Kansas after winning back-to-back games over the weekend.
After beating Coffeyville, Kansas 9-6 in the opening round on Saturday, the Boonville 15 All-Stars were even more impressive in the second round on Sunday by blanking Fairfield, Iowa 13-0.
The Boonville 15 All-Stars will now play Hi-Tower, Minnesota in the semifinal round tonight starting at 5:30 p.m.
In other games on Saturday, Fairfield defeated Lamar, Colorado 11-2 while East Lincoln, Nebraska edged Bismarck, North Dakota 1-0. Hi-Tower also prevailed Cimarron, Kansas by a score of 15-1.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Coffeyville beat Lamar in an elimination game 16-2 while Cimarron prevailed by the same identical score over Bismarck.
Tournament action will continue today, with East Lincoln playing Coffeyville at 12 noon, followed by Cimarron versus Fairfield at 3, Boonville versus Hi-Tower at 5:30.
In the first game against Coffeyville, the Boonville 15 All-Stars wasted little time getting out in front by pushing across two runs in the first to go up 2-0. However, over the next-three innings, Coffeyville outscored Boonville 3-1 to tie the game at 3-all after four. Coffeyville never got any closer in the ballgame as Boonville came back and exploded for six runs in the fifth to make it 9-3. Coffeyville made it interesting in the final-two innings by pushing across two runs in the sixth and one again in the seventh to cut the lead back to three.
Ethan Sander picked up the win on the mound for Boonville while Micah Elrod took the loss for Coffeyville.
Josh Judd started the game for Boonville and struck out two batters while giving up three runs on four hits and four walks in four innings. Sander then came in and pitched two innings in relief and allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out three. Then, to finish the game, Keaton Barnes pitched one inning and surrendered one run on two hits and one walk while striking out two.
For Coffeyville, Elrod pitched five innings and issued nine runs on 11 hits and two walks while striking out one.
Boonville also out-hit Coffeyville 12-9, with Austin Hulbert going 2-for-3 with a single, double and three RBIs.
Alec Viertel was 2-for-4 with two singles and two RBIs while Keaton Barnes also had two singles, Josh Judd with a RBI-triple, Kenan Johnson with a RBI-single and Ethan Sander, Jordan Copeland, Austin Henderson and Quincy Banuet with one single each.
For Coffeyville, Bradly Hershey went 3-for-5 with three singles and three RBIs.
In the second game on Sunday, the Boonville 15 All-Stars again had a great start by pushing across one run in the first, eight again in the second and four in the third to win by the mercy rule after five.
Page 2 of 2 - Sander again picked up the win on the mound for Boonville. In two innings, Sander gave up just one walk. Jordan Copeland then came in and pitched three innings in relief and struck out four batters while giving up just one hit and one walk.
Boonville also finished the game with eight hits against Fairfield, with Josh Judd going 1-for-4 with a double and four RBIs.
Jordan Copeland and Austin Henderson each had a double and two RBIs while Keaton Barnes finished the game with a double and one RBI, Ethan Sander with a single and two RBIs and Austin Hulbert and Alec Viertel each with a single and one RBI.
Brandon Plecker had the only hit in the game for Fairfield, being a single.
