  • Dear Editor,

First I want to thank Andy Melendez for the letter in Tuesday’s paper. It is great to see someone taking advantage of the 1st Amendment’s freedom of speech clause; so many people don’t.

The opportunity for health care is a right; health care is not. Our government is not responsible for our healthcare, nor are other taxpayers. We are.

One of my all-time favorite people, said the following: “It is amazing that people who think we cannot afford to pay for doctors, hospitals and medication somehow think that we can afford to pay for doctors, hospitals, medication and a government bureaucracy to administer it.” -- Dr. Thomas Sowell (black economist.)

What bothers me most about the Affordable Health Care Act is the misinformation being delivered as true. The worst misinformation is in its name. It isn’t “affordable.”

I pay health insurance; I also pay taxes that help fund Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, public health offices and nurses, government backed loans for mortgages and college students, and on and on. I try to be a caring, generous person, but I’m on a fixed income, and I don’t feel the least bit obligated to pay “more” taxes for a program that is set to bankrupt our country.

We can’t afford it. Not the country. Not the state. Definitely not the taxpayers of which I am but one. One big question is “What are you going to do when the 83% of the physicians who have threatened to quit actually do so?” If you removed eight out of ten doctors from practice in Boonville, how many would you have left?

There is no such thing as a free lunch.
