  • As the 4th of July draws near, Americans gather around grills, where various cuts of meat are smoked and charred prior to their transfer into their edible culinary containers. Bun is the word of the day.
    Wonder® hot dog and hamburger buns, the classic variety that each one of us is more than familiar with, are crafted, manipulated and churned out right here in town. If Main Street draws you close for any reason, at any time of day, you can smell them. Locally made, locally eaten and regionally shipped, consider the following statistics:
    In a single year, the bakery uses 18 million pounds of flour. In only 1 hour, it uses 7,500 pounds of the powdery substance. In just 1 minute, 408 individual buns will be produced. Efficiency in the name of mass production knows no limits here.
    According to the United States Census Bureau, Boonville's population is 8,640. A staggering 12 million buns leave the Boonville Bakery's walls every year. Were each Boonville resident to have complete access to that number, each citizen could consume 1,389 of the hot dog and hamburger holders.
    The local operation, 90 years in the making, bakes buns only – which are distributed region-wide. Through a partnership with the city's Tourism Department, painted scenes for the building's exterior have been commissioned. Nine individual pieces will be created, with the first two already complete.
    Depicted in the adjoining picture is the 1st Battle of Boonville – the Civil War engagement well-known to those in the area, historian and commoner alike.
