Having last played back on June 11, UMB?Bank manager Kevin Oser knew his team may be a little rusty going into last night’s game against Marshall at Twillman Field in Harley park.
However after dropping the first game of a doubleheader against Marshall 4-3, Oser expected his team to come out and play a better game in the nightcap.
Unfortunately for UMB Bank, they never got the chance as Marshall scored in every inning but one for a 11-1 victory at the sweep.
What makes it even worse is that UMB Bank entered last night’s game with a record of 4-0 in the Boonville Senior Babe Ruth League.
In the first game, Marshall got on the board first with one run in the top-half of the second on two walks and one single.
Meanwhile, after holding UMB Bank scoreless in its half of the second, Marshall came back and plated two more runs in the third to make it 3-0 on one walk, one hit and one error.
However the game was far from being over. In the bottom-half of the third, UMB Bank rallied back with three runs to tie the game at 3-all on two walks and a two-RBI single by Jared Oser.
Unfortunately for UMB Bank, they never got any closer to taking the lead in the ballgame as Marshall came back and scored what turned out to be the winning run in the top-half of the fifth when Darian Lawrence hit a one-out single and later scored on a pass ball.
UMB?Bank had its chances after that while loading the bases in the bottom-half of the fifth with one out only to come away with a goose egg. UMB Bank also stranded one runner each in the sixth and seventh innings of play.
Zach Bishop picked up the win on the mound for Marshall while Jalen Poindexter took the loss for UMB?Bank. Bishop went the distance and struck out seven batters while giving up three runs on four hits and four walks. Poindexter, meanwhile, pitched all seven innings for UMB?Bank and surrendered four runs on four hits and six walks while striking out six.
Lawrence, Tyler Cott, Caleb Willis and Trent Toliver each had one single in the game for Marshall.
For UMB Bank, Mitchell Hackman, John Reese, Andrew Kueny and Jared Oser each went 1-for-3 with one single.
In the nightcap, Marshall jumped out to stay against UMB?Bank by pushing across one in the second and two again in the third to go up 3-0. Meanwhile, in the bottom-half of the third, UMB?Bank scored its only run of the ballgame on the RBI-double by Jared Oser.
It was pretty much all Marshall after that with one run in the fourth, six again in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Mason Paulus picked up the complete-game victory for Marshall while John Reese took the loss for UMB Bank. In seven innings, Paulus struck out 11 batters and gave up one run on six hits and two walks. Reese, meanwhile, pitched 5 1/3 innings and yielded eight runs on six hits and five walks while striking out nine. Jared Oser then came in and pitched 1 2/3 innings and issued one run on one walk while striking out two.
Marshall also out-hit UMB?Bank 7-6, with Caleb Willis going 2-for-5 with a single and a triple. Devin Cott and Anthony Inzuma each had two singles while Canaan Neenzler added one single.
